National International Joint Research Center for Flexible Electronic Materials and Devices

The National International Joint Research Center for Flexible Electronic Materials and Devices (hereinafter referred to as "NIJRC-FEMD") was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in October 2015. NIJRC-FEMD focuses on the "four facings", that is, facing the forefront of world science and technology, facing the main battlefield of the economy, facing the country's major needs, and facing the life and health of the people. Based on the field of flexible electronics, NIJRC-FEMD takes the Institute of Advanced Materials of Nanjing Tech University as the Chinese supporting platform, and cooperates with world-class universities such as Oxford University, Imperial College of technology, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, and St Andrews University in the United Kingdom, innovatively implement the international scientific and technological cooperation mode of "Project-Talent-Platform".

NIJRC-FEMD with Academician Huang Wei as the discipline leader, has attracted and gathered more than 100 outstanding young backbones who have been active in the forefront of international academia. It has cultivated more than 120 national and provincial talents, including Foreign Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials Sciences, the Pakistani Academy of Sciences; National Distinguished Young Scholars and Yangtze River Scholars. In addition, NIJRC-FEMD has expanded its cooperation with world-class universities, such as the University of Queensland, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State University of Moscow, and jointly trained more than 1000 graduate students (including international postgraduates).

There are mainly four research directions under development as follows: (1) organic flexible electronics, (2) nano flexible electronics, (3) biological flexible electronics and (4) energy flexible electronics. It has undertaken more than 300 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, such as the National Key Basic Research and Development Plan, the NSFC Integration Project, and NSFC Major Instrumental Development. NIJRC-FEMD has published more than 50 highly visible originally innovative achievements in Nature, Science, Nature Energy, Nature Electronics, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Photonics, Nature Communications and other international top academic journals. At the same time, there has been more than 150 patents from China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Europe and other countries approved.

Integrating international high-quality scientific and technological resources, NIJRC-FEMD fully cooperates in talent training, scientific research, discipline construction, social service, etc. For instance, the cooperation with Natural Publishing Group of Springer Nature results in establishing the open access journal npj Flexible Electronics. Additionally, through holding more than 10 international academic conferences in the field of flexible electronics, it has opened up a number of distinctive and high-level international cooperation carriers. NIJRC-FEMD has devoted to promoting the practice of institutional and cultural innovation in line with international standards, as well as building a cutting-edge interdisciplinary innovation platform and a distribution center for high-end talents, and finally contributing to accelerating the realization of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance in China.
