Overview

 

The School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Nanjing Tech University was formerly the English major of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology established in 1988. In March 2002, the former School of Foreign Languages and International Communication of Nanjing Tech University and the former Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office of Nanjing Institute of Architecture and Engineering integrated and became the new School of Foreign Languages. In May 2015, it was renamed as the School of Foreign Languages and Literature. According to the 2018 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects, the school’s foreign language and literature discipline ranked 99th.

The school currently has five undergraduate majors, namely, English, Japanese, German, International Chinese Language Education, and Spanish, one MA degree program in Foreign Languages and Literature, one MA degree program in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and one MPS degree program in International Chinese Language Education. Additionally, the school has a foreign language teaching department, a foreign language teaching lab, and five research centers: Applied Linguistics, Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature, Corpus Studies and Discourse Analysis, International and Regional Studies, as well as Language and Cognition.

The school has a group of full-time teachers with advanced educational ideologies, rich teaching experience and outstanding scientific research ability. All of our teaching staff graduated from well-known domestic and international universities. Among them, there are three professors and over 40 associate professors, one outstanding young scholar in social sciences of Jiangsu Province, four recipients of research grants from the Jiangsu Qinglan project aimed to train young and middle-aged academic leaders as well as outstanding young scholars, four “Entrepreneurial & Innovative” doctoral degree holders in Jiangsu Province. More than 90% of the teachers have overseas research or further study experience. The school employs 10 foreign teachers of various languages throughout the year.

 

Departments

Department of English

English major has the longest history in the School of Foreign Languages and Literature. In 2020, it was selected as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate major construction site in Jiangsu. It has the only MA degree program in Nanjing Tech University, and has formed three unique research lines: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Foreign Literature, and Translation Studies. Building on its tradition, English major is devoted to excellence in teaching and research, and to cultivating future talents who are able to be globally engaged citizens. To fulfill this mission, the department of English optimizes diversified training models to match its standards with the nation’s growth and its students’ interest and learning objectives through integration of disciplines of linguistics, literatures, Interpretation and International Business, and prepares qualified students to succeed in such competitive employment as education, translation, trade, cultural exchange and professional service with global literacy, interdisciplinarity and responsible citizenship,

 

Department of Japanese

The Japanese major adopts the “foreign language +” training mode, combines professional education and teaching with innovation and entrepreneurship practice, and advocates “common development and personality improvement”. It aims to cultivate strategic reserve talents with international competitiveness in foreign affairs service, international exchanges, and international communication of Chinese culture. In 2019, it was selected as a first-class undergraduate major construction site in Jiangsu Province. According to the 2021 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects in Chinese universities, the Japanese major ranked 81st in the nation and 31st in provincial universities.

 

Department of German

The German major adopts the “German +” training mode. In addition to basic training in language skills, students can choose courses from German and business course series in cooperation with FHM School, German + translation course series in cooperation with Munich University of Applied Languages, and a series of teacher training courses in cooperation with the German Cultural Exchange Center - Goethe-Institut, and a series of independent technology-oriented courses designed by teachers from the school.

 

Department of International Chinese Language Education

The major was established in 2016 and selected as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate major construction site in Jiangsu in 2021. In the same year, a professional master’s degree program in International Chinese Language Education was approved by the Ministry of Education. Integrating the resources in the school, the major fully adopts the “Chinese + foreign language” training model, and is committed to cultivating talents proficient in multiple languages and cultures, capable of teaching Chinese as a second language and engaging in international culture exchanges between China and foreign countries.

 

Department of Spanish

Integrating the resources of the university, Spanish major adopts the “solid foundation, wide scope” training model and cultivate talents who have good competence in the Spanish language, comprehensive quality, international vision and cross-cultural communication ability and can participate in China’s foreign exchanges as well as national and local economic and social development.

Introduction to Eminent Professors

 

Prof. Bao Gui 

Prof. Bao Gui received his PhD in English Language and Literature from Nanjing University. His main research areas are second language acquisition and research methodology. He is the principal investigator of one National Social Science Fund project (13BYY079), two Humanities and Social Science Fund projects of the Ministry of Education (19YJA740001, 09YJAZH044) and two Jiangsu Social Science Fund Projects (18YYB013, 09YYB010). He has published one monograph and two textbooks. He has won one third prize of the 12th Jiangsu Province Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award and another third prize of the 15th Jiangsu Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award. His textbook entitled “Statistical Analysis Methods of Linguistics Research” is a key textbook for colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province during the “13th Five-Year Plan”. He has published more than 40 linguistics papers in SSCI, CSSCI and Chinese core journals.

Prof. Chen Shihua 

Prof. Chen Shihua received his PhD in Theory of Literature and Art from Nanjing University. His main research areas are the study of Sino-Japanese literature relationships, the study of Okinawa literature, and the study of contemporary literary phenomena. Prof. Chen is an executive director of the Chinese Japanese Literature Research Association. In recent years, he has received two research grants from the National Social Science Fund (14BWW008, 20AWWW003) and is the principal investigator of one provincial postgraduate education reform project (JGLX18_106), one Jiangsu Provincial Social Science Fund project (13WWB008), and one Jiangsu University Philosophy and Social Science Fund major project (2020SJZDA022). He is the editor-in-chief of one textbook and has published more than 30 papers in A&HCI and CSSCI indexed journals. He is also a regular contributor to the annual review of Japanese literature for the journal New Perspectives on World Literature.

Prof. Hu Yuanjiang 

Prof. Hu Yuanjiang received his PhD in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Nanjing Normal University. His main research areas are translation studies and corpus linguistics. He is the principal investigator of one Humanities and Social Science Fund project of the Ministry of Education (12YJC740033), two Jiangsu Provincial Social Science Fund projects (17YYB013, 09YYD014), one Jiangsu Provincial University Philosophy and Social Science major project (2020SJZDA011), one Jiangsu Province Higher Education Reform Research key project, one Jiangsu Province postgraduate education and teaching reform project (JGLX18_106, outstanding project), and was a main participant of one National Social Science Fund. He won the third prize of Jiangsu Province Educational Research Achievement Award. Prof. Hu has published nearly 30 papers in CSSCI indexed journals and one monograph and edited five textbooks.
