School of Materials Science and Engineering

Overview

 

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in Nanjing Tech University was derived from the Chemical Engineering Department of National Central University. Since its foundation in 1952, the college has adhered to facing international academic frontiers and national major requirements in the materials field. Through the construction of high-level creative teams, teaching & research platforms, and innovation systems, the school strengthens the predominant directions of the disciplines, striving to build the world-leading materials science and engineering disciplines. So far, a large number of high-level talents with innovative & entrepreneurial spirit, international vision and international competitiveness have been cultivated. Many scientific research achievements with high perceptiveness have been developed, taking over the strategic high ground of science and technology of the material field in various directions and providing the driving force and key technology support for the high-end development of the material industry.


After more than 60 years of construction, our MSE discipline has developed into the priority discipline of Jiangsu Province, the cultivation and construction site of first-class discipline and national key discipline of Jiangsu Province. It is the innovation pilot area of the national talent training model, the Ministry of Education pilot unit for comprehensive reform of postgraduate education for professional degrees, the National Engineering Practice Education Center, and the research base of the functional composite materials. It is also an important supporting discipline for the State Key Laboratory of Materials-Oriented Chemical Engineering, the International Joint Research Center of Flexible Electronic Materials and Devices, and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Biological and Chemical Manufacturing in Jiangsu Province. Besides the national characteristic specialty construction site of Materials Science and engineering, it has three national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites, namely Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Polymer Materials and Engineering. The discipline ranks among the top 0.92‰ of ESI in the world, and the top 10% of the National Top disciplines based on soft science.


In the priority direction, our MSE discipline has the academic leaders, involving 3 academicians (Mingshu Tang, Lian Zhou and Xiangbao Chen) and 4 principal scientists (Xiaodong Shen, Zhongzi Xu, Zhongwei Gu and Qing Liu). The school has 140 faculty members and 37 supporting staff members including 51 professors and 70 associate professors, and the teaching staff has been selected as the Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education. More than 90% of the teachers have overseas study experience and more than 95% have a PhD.


Our MSE discipline has long been affiliated to Jiangsu Electron Microscopy Society, Jiangsu Particle Science Society and Nanjing Silicate Society, and vice president institution of Jiangsu Silicate Society and Jiangsu Circular Economy Association, playing an important role in academic communications and science popularization. As the Executive vice president institution and president institution respectively, we have launched and participated in the China Ocean Material Industry Technology Innovation Alliance and Aerogel Material Branch of China Adiabatic Energy Saving Materials Association. The academic alliance of "Dean Forum of Materials Institute in Nanjing" has become a brand exchange project of Nanjing Association for Science and Technology. <npj Flexible Electronics>, an open access journal, was created in collaboration with Nature Publishing Group, becoming the first "Nature Partner Journal" in flexible electronics and related fields.


Our MSE discipline has strong scientific research power. In the past 5 years, the research fund has reached nearly 200 million RMB, including nearly 100 million RMB for longitudinal study. More than 1600 SCI papers and 600 EI papers have been published; over 430 patents have been applied, including 8 PCT patents and more than 260 authorized patents, as well as having published 6 monographs. Scientific research achievements have won nearly 20 provincial and ministerial awards, such as Technological Invention Award of the Ministry of Education and second prize of Science and Technology of Jiangsu Province.

For many years, our MSE discipline has cultivated over ten thousand undergraduate and more than two thousand graduate students, including the Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Mingshu Tang, Dongliang Jiang, Xianghong Cao, Delong Xu, Jiaping Liu), the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Jianlin Shi), Chinese Engineering Survey and Design master (Yuliang Cai), the former director of the National Building Materials Industry Bureau (Yanmou Wang), Sinoma Group CEO (Zhongming Tan), Sinoma International Engineering CEO (Yan Liu). We have provided a large number of high-quality talents to the society, who have made great contributions to key project construction and the development of China's and even the international new material industry.
