Brief Introduction

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Nanjing Tech University originated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the former Central University and Jinling University dating back to more than one hundred years ago. Currently there are 108 faculty members and 34 supporting staffs including 44 professors, 32 associate professors and 20 supervisors of PhD programs. The School has outstanding faculty and excellent research teams with the proper age, technical and educational structure, including 3 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 chief scientists for the National "973" Program, 1 chief scientist for the Military "973" Program, and 2 National Excellent Experts.

The College has built up integrated educational systems from the programs for undergraduates to that for post-docs. There are more than 67 PhD candidates, 498 graduate students and 30 Engineering graduate students, 1911 undergraduates and 14 post-docs. The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering has been granted the title of Jiangsu first-level key discipline, national key disciplines constructive center and National Excellent Specialty.  The specialty of inorganic non-metal materials engineering has also been granted Jiangsu Provincial Excellent Specialty for Universities. The College received dozens of national and provincial level awards including second-level national natural science awards and first level awards of national excellent education achievements.

Scientific Research

The research areas in MSE include the theoretical study, application and development of inorganic, polymer, composite and metallic materials. The main research interests are as follows:

> Advanced polymer

> Special materials

> New energy materials

> Corrosion and protection of metals

> Structure and property characterization

In the past few years, the College has undertaken 2 National Key Basic Research ("973") Projects, 1 military key basic research ("973") project, 4 National Hi-Tech R&D ("863") Projects, 26 research projects from the central governments and many important projects funded by the military, central/local governments and industry. The total research fund has reached more than 120 million RMB in the past three years. Also, the College has obtained 12 technological innovation awards at the national and provincial levels. More than 300 publications have been indexed by SCI and EI, and more than 30 patents have been authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office of the P. R. China. The College also organized one international conference and 12 national conferences.
